Back in August of last year, I had finally finished Rock Lee and His Ninja Pals, the gag anime spinoff of Naruto. It was as if they went into the past, fetched my seventh/eighth grade self, and had that weirdo write the script. Me from back then just did not care and wasn’t aware that a lot of the stuff I posted was offensive. You can see for yourself; I don’t delete my stuff/hide my past. Sure, I was offensive, but those were my happiest times for creation. I didn’t stop and think, “Is this offensive?? Please don’t hate me!” every time I started to doodle which causes me quite a bit of stress; I just created. The spinoff anime reminded me of those times. Many of the episodes seemed like they had been adapted right from my old comics or right from my own little past mind.
While I was watching it, I went searching for NejixTenten fanart on pixiv, finding that it was a lonely little tag. NejixHinata, a pairing which had NEVER been on my radar, were PAGES more popular than NejixTenten. I guess I just always thought that NejixTenten was a common pairing worldwide since we had such a striving community back then—amazingly striving. NejixTenten fanworks were never sparse in the English Naruto community after all. Seeing so much beautiful NejiHina art made me think, “What the frick did I even give to the community? A bunch of NejiTen crack?”. It was true. Most of my crap was crack. So I drew a lot of NejiTen—some crack, some not. I’m not uploading, linearting/coloring all of it, but here are some. The NejiTenComeback!

NejiHina shipper here... so actually I might not find your picture so dazzling but I think there is some truth in your description.
Before Neji died the NejiHina fandom was one of those most people hated. We got a lot of hatred actually. I checked out the pages of those haters and most times (9/10) it was actually NejiTen fandom. (I think I also know why but that is another topic.) Only one time it was another crack... the rest was simply Naruhina.
When Neji died many people thought that our fandom became more popular. Actually I do not think it was so many people joining us. It more or less stayed the same... only the hatred got less. Some left off like "now you are completely crack". But most were too shaken that Neji did not end up with Tenten and their pairing is now cracked too. Probably even more than NejiHina ever was...
Well, we went on liking our pairing since we knew canon or not did not make a difference to us. We loved that pairing from the bottom of our hearts.
And what about the canon pairings? Are they better off with their brats?
I doubt it... isn't all the discussion about those kids killing the actual pairings off? I even had some good laugh with somebody else reinterpreting the last chapter
In a way the manga was to our favor... even if neither, NejiHina nor NejiTen became canon.
Your problem was, there were too many half-assed fans around that only wanted to swim along the main-stream and then found out, they were in a puddle all the time. All you lost was these people... in a way it is good for NejiTen fandom because you have now sincere fans... not just those streamers.
